One of the best from a rig of 12 found about 5 years ago. 2500-3500 Provenance By descent in Wood family 584A. A.E. Crowell black duck from the from the rig of W. H. Wood. Used by he and his sons on Great Pond in Wellfleet MA in the 20s into the early 30s. Retains Crowells oval hot brand. Signature rasp work on the rear of the head and breast. The clarity of the brand indicates a build date of 1918 to 1920. None from the rig have seen much use. The only wear can be seen in the photo. It is on the lower right side of the body as it faces you. Decoy is in exceptionally fine original condition. One pellet can still be seen imbedded to the right of the eye. See photo. 3500-4500 585. Hollow carved black duck. Extremely similar to known rigs of birds from the Mattapoisett and Marion area of the south coast of Massachusetts and strongly attributed to this area. Very cheeky carved head on a raised neck seat. Slightly crazed and crackled original paint with some minor rubs. Attractive feather painting on head. Some in-use repairs to lifted grain on right side and under tail. Nails that join body halves visible and old thin crack in neck. 300-450 585A. Very rare lot of two items related to the early Bird and Game Laws of Rhode Island. First item is a Deputy Bird Commissioner badge with the years 1932 to 1935 noted on raised panels. Badge number is 295 with the blue enamel symbol for the State of Rhode Island attached to the center of the badge. Retains original pin hasp. No Hallmark. Second item is a small pamphlet of the Bird and Game Laws of Rhode Island revised to June 1931. Forty six pages measuring about 3 X 5 . The booklet notes that starting in 1923 there would be five commissioners appointed for three year terms and that these commissioners shall appoint a number of deputies. It also lists the duties of the Commissioners and the deputies. Both pieces are very good and original. Very interesting reading and a wonderful early piece of Rhode Island sporting history. 400-600 585 585A2 584 584A 143
