540. Remarkable carving of a clam digger by Alabamas Calvin M. Cal Logue b1935. Sculpture features a man with a woven clam basket in his right hand and a rake in the right rake broken and laying near his boots looking down at a young girl who is offering him a quahog from her tiny basket. Likewise the little girl has detailed hair dress and basket. Carved from a single piece of wood with the exception of the bottom of the rake. Man stands approximately 13 tall and the overall dimensions are approximately 16 x 10 dia. Signed on base C. Logue 1967 possibly 87. Mr. Logue carves mostly southern based scenes and is a retired professor emeritus of Speech Communication from the University of Georgia. 300-500 540A. Letter opener or bookmark in the form of a sh. Measures approx. 5 overall. Very good original paint with delineated scales. 100-200 541. Rare and wonderful half carving of a killer whale by Gus Mirando of White Plains New York circa early 1980s. Carved eye fins open mouth and inset teeth. Excellent original paint and condition. Retains original hanging wires and the deep Mirando hot brand. Measures approximately 18 12 long overall. Mirando was inspired by the work of Clark Voorhees 1911-1980 and after Voorhees death he was encouraged by Nina Hellman of Nantucket to begin carving. He carved for only a few years. His whales are all hand carved and were only produced in very limited numbers. 300-500 542. Outstanding and early life size half body carving of a schoolie striped bass or rocksh by Chet Eldred. Measures about 21 overall. Inlet fins and tail. Extremely accurate carving detail in the treatment of the gills fins and mouth. Outstanding drawn or painted scales accomplished with hundreds or thousands of individual strokes. Excellent structural condition see Swanson reference. Noted on reverse Made by Chet Eldred Silversmith at Pairpoint - about 1925. Pairpoint was located in New Bedford around the 1900s and later moved to Sandwich on Cape Cod. This lot includes the book Fish Models Plaques and Effigies by Ronald Swanson. 1500-2500 543. Flying goose weathervane by the late Fred Anderson of Maine. Fred learned his craft when working with his next door neighbor Augustus Gus Wilson Maines most famous decoy maker. Applied dropped wings and a outstretched neck a form made famous by A.E. Crowell.
